The DeLay/Perry/Craddick redistricting plan was designed to render meaningless the votes of more than a million minority Texans. Divvied up into districts gerrymandered to be overwhelmingly Republican, most of them became irrelevant to Republican congressmen swerving far to the right to mollify the extremists who vote in the GOP primary.
Of the "Texas Eleven" ("Los Once de Tejas") senators who went to Albuquerque in 2003 to break the Senate quorum -- seven were Hispanic Texans, and their heroic stand in defense of their fellow Tejanos brings to mind the challenge of the great hero of the Mexican Revolution, Gen. Emiliano Zapata: "It is better to die on your feet than to live on your knees." We don't expect our elected representatives to die for us, but we celebrate their courageous stand for justice and fair play.
