Talk about "Profiles in Courage!" Our courageous "Texas Eleven" senators risked it all to stop Tom DeLay and Karl Rove from stealing what they couldn't win at the polls!
In 2002, of 32 Texas congressional districts, 20 of them voted Republican in most races — but only 15 elected GOP members to Congress that year. (Voters in several Republican-leaning districts either liked their Democratic congressmen or they were simply appalled by the right-wing nuts the GOP put on the ballot. Or both.)
So DeLay and Rove went all out to rig it so future GOP primary winners in those districts would be guaranteed victory in November — no matter if they're to the right of Rush Limbaugh and Ghengis Khan! In the process, they did their best to insure that mainstream voters — including moderate Republicans — would not have any real choice in upcoming general elections.
Rather than be steamrolled, our heroic Texas Eleven senators flew off to Albuquerque, leaving Rove, DeLay, Gov. Perry and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst short one quorum in the Senate. Our heroes held out New Mexico for more than a month before one of them decided the point was made and returned to Austin, ending the standoff.
It was great while it lasted, and this commemorative shirt is a real collector's item.
